GarageBand

Apple includes their entry-level GarageBand music editing app with every new Mac. That means, if you're new to music or a hobbyist, GarageBand is where it's at. GarageBand uses the same Drummer digital session player as Logic Pro X (though to a lesser extent in terms of available sounds) and is the perfect app to help you start creating and mixing songs — especially if you're a super novice.

  • Mashup 2 is the latest big update to Mashup, Mixed in Key's best-selling DJ software that allows you to create mashups in five minutes or less. Mashup 2 offers DJs the ability to be more creative with their mashups and create exclusive tracks for their sets using the.
  • Apr 28, 2020  UltraMixer is a professional DJ software package that also offers a free trial version for Mac and Windows users. UltraMixer provides full control over audio, video, and image files, and lets you mix music and video files at the same time. Additional features include a 16-channel sampler, smart looping, and 8 hot-cue buttons for live remixing.

The interface is easy to use and though the app is powerful and full of controls, it's not overwhelming or as involved as some of the more professional audio editors.

You can upload your own recordings to GarageBand and mix them with the digital instruments, or you can create an entire song using just your recordings or just the instruments found in GarageBand. If you're not satisfied with the instruments available, you can also purchase instrument packs to get different sounds. Use iCloud to store your projects or share them with friends for collaboration. You can even start a song on your iPhone and then finish it on your Mac!

If you want to get into music production and also want to keep things convenient and within the Apple ecosystem, GarageBand is the best place to start.

Logic Pro X

Logic Pro X is Apple's pro-level music editing software that still manages to be accessible to beginners. The powerful app has all the tools you could want for mixing, editing, and songwriting, with a massive library of instruments and effects. If you're looking to make polished, professional-sounding recordings, without a ton of complexity, then Logic Pro X is where it's at.

The 64-bit architecture supports projects featuring hundreds of tracks and instruments, so if you're a composer, it's like heaven. I have to say: As a drummer, I hate canned drum sounds. Logic Pro X's Drummer is top-notch when it comes to producing authentic acoustic drums sounds, and sometimes I actually can't tell the difference (I know, shame on me).

The app does come at a professional-level price, at $200, but if you're serious about music editing on the Mac and enjoy songwriting and composing on a grand level, it's easily one of, if not the best choice out there.

Pro Tools

Pro Tools, by Avid, is one of the most popular music editing apps in the industry. It can be used to record, mix, master, and much, much more. You can lay down up to 128 tracks per session, with 32 inputs and over 60 plugins, and you can create an unlimited number of sessions.

Pro Tools is definitely not for the faint of heart and isn't necessarily an app you can just pick up and go with. I had to go to school to learn how to use it (before all these damn YouTube tutorials made school obsolete!). That being said, it isn't beyond the pale to learn the basics and get yourself up and running fairly quickly. Importing audio is as easy as dragging from the Finder window and placing it on the timeline (so long as your current session supports that file format).

From there, you can add a plethora of effects to your audio and edit it like mad, controlling volume, speed, pitch, tone, and much more. Honestly, the stuff you can do with Pro Tools seems just about endless. It is one of the most robust audio editing apps available, and is definitely for those looking to tackle things on a professional level.

That being said, if you have the cash, go for it, and learn all there is to know!

Pricing is what you'd expect: $24.92 per month with a 12-month agreement or $29.99 month-to-month, $599 to buy it outright.

djay Pro

For the performance DJ (or even the hobbyist, really) djay Pro has all the effects, compatibility, and mixing capabilities you could ask for. You can sample from iTunes and Spotify simultaneously, and you can even mix in video from the extensive video library for the ultimate experience.

You can mix from four decks and create mashups and transitions galore, and you can edit playlists on the fly, use external displays and AirPlay, and there's Pioneer CDJ/XDJ integration for even more versatility.

If you're a pro DJ or just want a fun way to mix at a house party, djay Pro's price might be its best selling feature, at only $40.

Audacity

Audacity is a free open source audio editing and recording software that lets you cut, copy, paste, and delete audio. It isn't exactly the most powerful when it comes to music editing, but if you're wanting to slap together some demo material or something like that, it's perfect. You can import audio in many formats, though for MP3, you'll have to install a separate, optional encoder library.

You can edit and mix a large number of tracks at once and even alter individual sample points, though you can't add effects or do any sort of mastering. Audacity may be better-suited to podcasting, but, like I said, if you're putting together demos or just need to create rough ideas, it's perfect, because FREE.

New EU regulations target App Store, empowering developers

The EU has introduced new regulations and measures to help protect developers and publishers who deal with storefronts like the App Store.

For DJs looking to get into making their own music in addition to playing other people’s music view mashups as kind of the ‘end all, be all’ of music making. But what about new DJs who want to do their own thing but have no idea how or where to begin?

Well for you newbies out there it is all about finding the best mashup software…mostly. Of course the software will only do so much for you; an ear for music, creativity and a desire to create something truly great are also required. But that’s up to you and for a different article.

Today my focus is helping you find mashup software so you can get start right away so keep reading!

A Word Of Advice

Before we get into the intricacies of mashup software let’s talk for a minute about what a mashup is and is not. Sure a mashup is technically combining 2 complete tracks together to create a unique track. But don’t think that you can just take your 2 favorite tracks, throw’em in the software and BAM you have a kick ass mashup.

That is not how it works. In fact producing takes more than just a love of music; it also requires more than a little knowledge of music theory. This means paying close attention to the little things in each song to see how well they go together. The software will do a lot of the work for you but it won’t do all.

Sound Quality

One of the first things the best mashup software has is amazing sound quality. You want to make sure that the software doesn’t skew the sound or blow it out. It doesn’t matter how good a mashup is if the sound sucks.

Creating your own mashups means paying close attention to bass, drums and any other instruments as well as the tempo.

It’s important to understand that by mashing tracks you’re basically going to be stretching out already-compressed music files. Some music and mashup traditionalists will tell you that when this is done using software compared to say high-end super techie studio products, it sounds awful. Well by comparison sure, but mashup software is a less expensive way to get your feet wet in the world of mashups.

Can You Use It?

Mashup Software Download

This is a no-brainer but you need to be able to use the best mashup software you can find. Right now the software getting the most lip service is Ableton Live but Mixed In Key has also recently released its own software, Mashup.

Of course any beginner DJ can follow even the most basic instructions, but you also need to be able to read and understand different aspects of creating music. Mixed In Key will match the key for you so that’s taken care of but what about waveforms? Tempo? BPM? EQ? These are things you’ll have to understand before using the software.

File Support

Before you choose mashup software you want to know what file types does it support? In this day and age most DJs have MP3, but what about the other various file types out there? If you have tons of WAV files, make sure your software supports it—Ableton Live does.

Bells & Whistles

Ok so usually I would say that a good piece of software isn’t about the bells and whistles but the quality of the bells and whistles it has. But when it comes to mashups, the best mashup software should provide you with variety. You need to create an original track that’s unique and that people want to hear.

To do that you’ll need choices to do whatever you feel needs to be done to create a proper mashup. You’ll need effects, cut and paste options, looping and filters just to name a few. In fact it is the ‘bells & whistles’ section that keeps Ableton Live as the best mashup software. Mixed In Key is fairly new and without any real effects and limited editing options.

Best Software To Make Mashups On Mac Download

This is really a must because with limited options you’re limited in how good your mashups can be.

Cost

Price is always an issue when purchasing any type of DJ equipment, but since there aren’t a ton of options for mashup software you don’t have many choices. The new Mixed In Key software is inexpensive, around $40 (USD) but it is severely limited. A full version software of Ableton Live can run you more than $300 but it does offer a mashup DJ a lot and it’s a well-known and trusted software maker.

Time

Ok in all honesty I put this category in here because Mixed In Key Mashup says you can create a mashup in 5 minutes or less. For the record you probably can do that, but you definitely shouldn’t. Creating any good music, including a mashup, takes time to make sure all components fit properly. This means you may need to create it, listen and change it.

If creating fast mashups is your goal then this is something you’ll want to consider when buying mashup software. But I think the best mashup software will have more features and functions instead of fast promises.
